What happened in Kerry this week

Monaco’s Prince Albert is tracing the footsteps of his famous mother Princess Grace by visiting Kerry where he’s due to deliver the keynote address at the Global Economic Summit in Killarney on Monday.

As the controversy over GAAGO continues this week, Kerry’s highly anticipated clash against Monaghan on Saturday is the latest big game set to be streamed by the pay-per-view channel.

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Killarney this week to say their final farewell to one of the town’s most loved characters – Caoimhín ‘Shaq’ O’Donoghue from Ardshanavooly.

Thousands of people rose before dawn last Saturday morning in solidarity and hope with those impacted by suicide with Darkness Into Light walks taking place across the county to raise thousands of euro for suicide prevention charity Pieta House.

It's the late light show!

The Northern Lights put on a breathtaking spectacle over Kerry last Friday night when the most powerful solar storm in decades gave us a rare and stunning celestial display.

Cloud-free skies above the Kingdommeant that sky gazers could see the glory of the Aurora Borealis display –a phenomenon that happens when charged particles crash into gases in the Earth's atmosphere near the magnetic poles.

More commonly seen inIceland, northern parts of Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia, parts of Canada and Alaska as well as southern Greenland, last weekend social media lit up as locals shared their ‘once in a lifetime photos’ –capturing pictures from Tralee to Brosna, Milltown to Dingle, Killarney to Listowel.

Nicola's Strictly a winner!

Tralee woman Nicola Fitzgerald is celebrating this week and still pinching herself after scooping up a BAFTA TV Award for the smash hit show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Nicola was given the coveted golden award for her role as series producer after ‘Strictly’ was named Best Entertainment Programme at the lavish, star-studded awards held in The Royal Festival Hall in London last Sunday.

Nicola was one of six crew members given a personal BAFTA which she says she hasn’t let out of her sight all week.

‘Let’s get behind our team!’

WHEN Kerry last played in an Under 21 All-Ireland Football Final 16 years ago, current U20 manager Tomás Ó Sé was captain of the Kingdom seniors. Now the 45-year-old Ventry native is calling on supporters to again travel in their numbers to Sunday’sAll-Ireland Final against Tyrone –incidentally Kerry’s opponents in the senior final back in 2008.

Urging Kerry supporters to double up their weekend support with the seniors taking on Monaghan in Killarney on Saturday, Ó Sé says supporters travelling to the final in Portlaoise on Sunday won’t be let down as the Kingdom’s next generation seek a first title since 2008 –when the competition was the Under 21 Championship.

And ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland showdown, the Kerry U20 managersaid his young side are the most honest bunch of lads he has come across.

Cahersiveen revamp to begin this year

MAJOR regeneration works that are set to transform Cahersiveen will get underway this year following the allocation of almost €6.5m in funding to progress the key project that will change the landscape of the South Kerry town.

Work is expected to get underway by the end of the year on plans to create a ‘Daniel O’Connell Quarter’ as part of a major multi-million euro project to help transform and regenerate Cahersiveen, in a move described as a game-changer for the South Kerry town.

Planning was granted earlier this year for the €19.5m redevelopment project which also includes major works to the town’s waterfront and a new boardwalk, as well the renovation and extension of the historic Carnegie Building –the town’s former library.

Summer Vibes at Ballyb’s newest market

North Kerry locals in search of some hand-crafted or home-made delights will soon be able to shop to their heart’s content in a scenic new summer market overlooking Ballybunion’s beautiful beaches.

Located in an idyllic spot directly across the road from McMunn’s pub and restaurant, the new Summer Vibes market will open for business on June 1st under new leadership and will run each Saturday from June 1st through to August 31st, from 10am to 3pm.

Visitors to the market will find a huge array of products to choose from, including fabulous handmade handbags, knitting and crochet, local Ballybunion merchandise, jewellery, all things fairy and much, much more besides. And to keep your appetite sated while you peruse the stalls there will also be a chance to treat yourself to coffee and waffles, as well as delicious BBQ treats.

Daire named Musician of the Year

Tralee teen saxophonist Daire Murphy recorded history last weekend when he was named as theKerry School of Music’s Musician of the Year for 2024.

The talented 14-year-old Tralee musician is a saxophone student of Ryan Mulvihill at the Kerry School of Music and plays in the School Senior Orchestra and Wind Band. Daire is also a member of the Gleneagle Concert Band in Killarney.

What’s more, Daire’s award win is an historic moment as it marks the first time ever that a saxophonist has won the prestigious musician title.
